Teach your kids Indian culture and values

Teaching Children

Childhood is a great time, without a doubt. It is also a time, when people develop their values and habits which can define them for the rest of their life. If proper values are taught to children, they will surely be able to make use of them when they grow up.

Teaching values is important for building the character of your child. Here is the list of top 10 Indian values which you must instill in your child.

1. Respect For Elders

Respect is one of the greatest of virtues as considered by Indian culture. A child needs to be taught how to give the proper respect to the elders, including parents and relatives. Later in life, they will be more likely to be considerate of others when faced with difficult situations.

2. Ability to Sacrifice

Life is fraught with hardships. There will be many occasions where a sacrifice is necessary in order to make the best of a difficult situation. A child needs to understand the value of sacrifice. After all, it is not possible to have the cake and eat it too.

3. Importance Of A Good Education

Children should understand the importance of education if they want to become successful later in life. Indian values place a lot of importance on education as well. You should try and make your children understand the value and importance of good education. Develop within them a love for education. Once they love learning, success is going to be an easy achievement for these children.

4. Love For Family

It is often said that a loving family is the birthright of every child. However, it is quite common to see children growing up and having a dysfunctional family of their own. This is simply because they were unable to learn how to love and care for a family. Try and inculcate within your children a love for the family by showing them the joys it brings.

5. Strength to Persevere

As mentioned before, your children will have to face hardships on their own when they grow up. They need to have the strength to persevere even through the most difficult times. If they do not have it, they will end up giving up in every difficult situation. They will never be able to face criticism or hardships.

6. Imbibe A Religious Spirit

One very important value that is common for almost every household in India is the religious spirit. Your children should at least be familiar with their religion. More importantly, they need to learn religious tolerance which is a common phenomenon in India. Religion can teach many important lessons of life that your children will surely benefit from.

7. Learning to be Helpful

It is not possible for anyone to achieve a goal or complete a task without the help of others. Similarly, your children should be willing to help others. They should note that the joy of helping others is a reward in itself. There should not be any expectation of any other rewards.

8. Being Charitable

Charity is another unsung virtue which children can benefit from when they pick it up at an early age. Children can seem selfish at times which is why you should slowly introduce them to charity.

9. Honesty Matters

It can be shocking to hear children lying from a young age. It is simply because they do not yet know the harm in lying or they may lie out of fear. That is why you have to make your children understand that honesty is truly the best policy.

10. Self-Discipline Can Be Rewarding

A lack of self-discipline can lead to innumerable problems later in life. With it, your children can overcome almost every obstacle that life chooses to place in their way.

The future of your children is heavily dependent on what values you choose to inculcate in them now. Teaching them the right ones will help them lead a better life and a positive future.

Being a Responsible Older Sibling

Responsible Older Sibling

Older siblings often become role models for their younger brothers and sisters. They help protect and care for younger children when parents are at work or otherwise occupied. Because siblings tend to spend a lot of time together, it is important to understand the roles of older children and how they can affect younger siblings. Positive sibling relationships can influence every stage of life: from childhood, through adolescence and into adulthood.

Socialization

Through play and other interaction with their older brothers and/or sisters, young children learn skills such as conflict resolution and empathy, which can aid them in future social situations. However, older siblings remain prominent influences well beyond early childhood. They teach younger children how to act around friends and how to handle other peer-related situations. Older siblings may introduce their younger siblings to possible friends and provide outlets for continued socialization.

Academic Success

In many cases, older siblings play a role in the academic achievement of their younger brothers and sisters. Older siblings may motivate younger ones to succeed or provide help with homework or other scholastic endeavors. Older siblings play an especially large role in this regard in households where the parents work and the younger child is often in the care of the older siblings. Younger siblings are likely to model the study habits of their older siblings in any family.

Deterrent for Bad Behavior

Delinquency, risk taking and other problem behavior in children can be deterred by older siblings who are positive role models. If a younger child looks up to his older sibling who does not engage in delinquency, risk taking or drug use, he will be less likely to adopt these behaviors. For a younger sibling who does experiment with these behaviors, an older brother or sister can give helpful advice as to how and why to avoid future mistakes.

Negative Influence

Older siblings can also be negative influences on a younger child’s behavior and attitude. Various studies found that girls who looked up to their older, delinquent brothers were more prone to delinquent behaviors. Bullying is another way that a younger child can be negatively affected by an older sibling. Abuse or bullying by a sibling could result in social and/or emotional problems for the younger child.

Our siblings are the best friends. They will always be our family and we will keep seeing them grow into amazing human beings with our help. One important thing about being the older sibling is that our younger siblings aren’t the only ones that learn about life in this relationship; we, the older siblings, can learn so much from them too.

The Wonderful World Of Books

KIDS
A book is not only a companion but also a source of great knowledge. We might be living in a time where computers and the Internet have become the source and means of people’s entertainment and knowledge, but the wonderful world of books is still alive and well. During the first years of a child’s life, we, as parents, are providing our little ones with lots of different stimuli.

Books are the number one educational tool and children, as little as a few months old, they are fascinated by the colours and textures of a book. Babies might chew, throw or turn a book around but this will be the beginning of a long lasting journey to becoming a successful reader.

Here’s why you should encourage kids to read and how the wonderful world of books helps in shaping up their life:

  • Reading improves a child’s vocabulary and leads to more highly-developed language or social skills. A book provides a child with valuable vocabulary, starting from simple basic words all the way to making sentences and expanding their diction
  • Reading books stimulates and helps kids to create their own world of imagination. While reading the brain translates the descriptions we read of people, places and things into pictures
  • Books help in the development of empathy in kids. Being engrossed in a story stimulates emotions. We identify with the character in the story and hence, one can empathize with the character
  • Children who read do better at school. They do better at all subjects and they do better all the way through school. Different types of books offer children wider knowledge and experience
  • A book can be a great form of entertainment and can replace the Television and computer for a good part of the day. The constant movement, flashing lights and noise which bombard our senses when we’re watching TV, looking at a computer or playing an electronic game are actually quite stressful for our brains. Take some time-out
  • Lastly, the routine of reading a book with your child, at bedtime or at any other time, is emotionally nourishing and creates a long lasting bond. In addition, a parent can give examples of everyday life to the child that relates to the story. In this way, the child can recognize different situations as it grows up, and be better prepared to deal with or understand them

Time, spent with children by the book ‒ reading, telling stories, talking … ‒ is a quality time. Books provide inspiration, thought and reflection. It relaxes the body and calms the mind. Treasure every book you read and read often!

Teaching Kids the Value for Money

Money is an essential part of life and it’s never too early to teach your children its value and the importance of saving. This will help them to understand the importance of spending money wisely and sensibly. Three and four-year-olds are starting to develop the cognitive skills necessary to understand basic monetary concepts, such as identifying coins, figuring out how to count change, and matching small amounts of money to items they want to buy. Learning the principles of responsible handling of money should give them many opportunities for advancement when they are older, which is why it is important that, even at a young age, children cultivate a respect for money. Here’s how you can teach them the value for money:

  • As your child learns to count, you can demonstrate the relationship between different values of coins. Also, children like to play games that involve fake currencies and saving and spending. Allow your kids try some of the online games that teach money skills. It’s a good way for them to learn the role of money
  • Get your child a piggy bank. This is a simple action that will teach your child the importance of saving and will instill a sense of responsibility towards handling money. Give them small goals to achieve in a particular time frame. Encourage them to earn the money towards fulfilling their goals
  • Encourage your child to make little money. Earning money is not only educational but empowering for kids. Kids can follow the pretty simple idea of earning pocket-money like, helping elders with their daily chores.
  • Encourage your kids to plan how to spend their savings. It will make them understand that with more savings they can have bigger goals fulfilled
  • Give your children their own allowances when you go shopping. Educate them on sensible spending and explain the priorities when shopping. Remind them that at the end the day, the most important thing is that they can buy what they want because they were able to save money in the piggy banks
  • Familiarize your kids to the bank and open savings accounts in their names. Let them talk to the teller and conduct their business themselves. Make sure they understand the terms and conditions of the account and suggest they commit to depositing regular amounts on a weekly or monthly basis. Having their own bank account will give your children a feeling of achievement which could even motivate them to save more
  • Lastly, kids tend to learn more from what they see around them. Being parents, your attitude toward money, the way you handle it, makes an impression on your children just as surely as your attitude toward other personal matters

We hope that these steps will help you to give your kids a quick understanding about the value and importance of money.
